A tough half mile climb with fantastic views at the summit. This climb is part of the Flower Scar regeneration project that provides off road access between Todmorden and Bacup. The climb has a rough surface and traction can be an issue on this loose terrain. Not the steepest climb with an average gradient of 5.4%, although the maximum gradient of 11.2% makes the climb hard (Red).

A big (Cat 3) climb with an average gradient of 8.5% featuring a maximum gradient of 14.2%. The climb starts on the steep Inchcliffe road in Walsden before merging onto farms tracks and technical sections of bridleway. The final part of the climb will be a scramble for all riders but well worth it providing access to Long Causeway and the bridleway network above Watergrove reservoir. This 2.1 mile climb has a very hard (Black) status.
Very Hard – Black
Very Hard climbs will always feature a very steep gradient between 10 and 15% or feature technical terrain that requires a high level of skill to negotiate. This type of climb is a real challenge for anyone and a number of elements come into play on this type of climb.Having a bike that suits you with a good range of gears, health and general cycling fitness are all important to successfully complete a very hard – black climb.

Starting in Todmorden town centre this climb is tough from the start before the gradient reduces on the upper sections of the climb. The surface is good throughout and made up of road and farm tracks. The average gradient of the climb is 8.2% with a maximum gradient of 11.9%. Climb status is hard (Red) and (Cat 4).

This climb is short and tough and could even be the hardest off road climb in Calderdale. The average gradient of 13.2% is challenging enough but when the terrain ramps up to 21% at the steepest points both gears and leg power are needed. To make it even more difficult the terrain is technical in parts with step ups and tight turns. Clearing this climb is only likely to be achieved by strong and skilled cyclists in the dry. Climb status is very hard (Double Black) and (Cat 4).

Another instalment the Pennine Bridleway has to offer, this climb is best described as a short, sharp, shock. At only 0.3 miles in length the distance is nothing compared to the 10.1% average gradient that rises to 17.2% at the steepest point. This climb can be tricky even for the strongest of riders; it must be dry if you are going to clear it. Climb status very hard (Double Black).

If you have made it here your climbing legs should be warm from the Pennine Bridleway or Hollingworth Lane. This climb is 90% cobbled with the odd technical element thrown in where cobbles are missing or they have fallen away making the climb a challenge. The climb is fairly steep with an average gradient of 7.1% and a maximum of 10.8% giving it a hard (Red) status.

This climb is part of the Pennine Bridleway and hugs the hillside above Lumbutts, Todmorden. The climb has a 6% average gradient and kicks up to 7.9% at the steepest point. The surface is made up of bridleway, cobbled sets and technical elements on the final part making it tough towards the end. Climb status hard (Red).

An old packhorse route with super steep sets, only 0.7 miles in length with a (Cat 4) status this climb is super tough. From the road the bottom section is challenging in the dry with hidden rocks and in the winter months the mud plays its part. From the gate the climb ramps up on large cobbled sets and momentum is the key to getting up this climb. Standing up for increased power runs the risk of losing traction and sitting down with see some rider’s front wheels lift. Brag to your mates if you make it to the top without stopping or putting a foot down. Climb status very hard (double black).

A real mix of terrain from tarmac, fire road, a stream crossing and a super technical short challenge near the top. The climb has a 6% average gradient and becomes more difficult on the steeper sections with a 12.2% maximum gradient. The technical section of this climb is tough and luck and power are both needed. On the plus side it’s only a short walk for the many that will not clear this section. Climb status very hard (BLACK) because of the technical elements not the difficulty of the climb.

A hidden climb from the A646 on the outskirts of Todmorden, the climb 0.4 miles long is pretty steep for a fire road climb with an average gradient of 8.2%. There are a few sections were traction can be an issue, however this route provides a good all year round option to the great network of bridleways. Climb status hard (RED).
